2020 Winter Lecture Series - War's Waste Always Casts Long Shadows, WW1 Veterans on Screen

Join Dr. Tiffany Weaver for her presentation as it looks at Grand Hotel, The Man from Yesterday and The Last Flight, all pre-Code films with a World War I veteran character. These films all exhibit veterans with physical and/or mental wounds and demonstrates how wounded veterans were depicted in pre-Code films. With each film there is an exploration of how the war has forever changed the character, the type of wound the character has received, how the veteran has been relegated to the shadows of society, and how each character has come to feel like a burden to loved ones. Direct connections are also drawn between the wounded veterans and the workers of the modern industrial world.
