- Vernal ponds, large "puddles" scattered throughout the woods of Pennsylvania, support an amazing diversity of living organisms. As the ice and snow begin melting in the spring, vernal ponds quickly come to life. In the few short months before they dry in the summer, these ponds are a constant hub of activity.
