Program Description --- The Civilians of Gettysburg, 1863
The civilians found themselves in the middle of a storm before, during, and after the battle of Gettysburg. We will examine the issues facing these souls and will spend some time with Tillie Pierce and Fanny Buehler. We will also relate the tragic tale of Ginnie Wade and her connections to her fiance and Wesley Culp. Only lately has there been emphasis on the civilians and the battle’s effects on them.
Speaker Jim Richards is a retired Presbyterian pastor who served churches in Pennsylvania, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, and New Jersey. He first became interested in the Civil War as a child and focuses much of his research on Gettysburg. He is in the midst of writing a Civil War novel about a Confederate cavalry chaplain from South Carolina serving with Wade Hampton. The novel's working title is "Death’s Pale Ride." Jim is the founder and convener of the Civil War Roundtable at Green Ridge Village and recently presented a program there on Reconstruction and its continuing effects on today.
