This is moderately complex work involving occasional operation of Borough-owned equipment and occasional supervisory responsibility. An employee in this class performs technical and/or general maintenance tasks requiring a working knowledge and skill of a sub-journeyman level in operating or operation of sanitation trucks and construction equipment. All employees at this level may be called upon, from time to time, to operate equipment and serve as a lead worker for other employees or specific projects. An employee in this class may from time to time, be temporarily assigned to other departments within the Borough operation. Work assignments are detailed and subject to periodic checks. Main duties will consist of operation of sanitations trucks, assisting street department in plowing and snow removal, paving, mowing, working at our compost site and other duties as assigned. Also, may assist with water and wastewater departments. KNOWLEDGE Ability to understand and perform oral and written instructions. Basic knowledge of department operations. Ability to use basic hand and power tools to perform a variety of maintenance and repair operations. Ability to learn the operation of trucks and other mechanical and technical equipment. Ability to perform heavy manual labor, occasionally under adverse climatic conditions. Knowledge of the use of tools. Knowledge of hazards and safety precautions of the work assigned. Good physical condition. 1 Ability to operate and maintain vehicles and a variety of other machinery and equipment items used in construction, maintenance, and service of public works facilities. Ability to understand the daily route locations and complete the route in a timely manner. PHYSICIAL DEMANDS Ability to perform heavy manual labor continuously, ability to work under adverse climate conditions, cold, rain, heat and snow. Must be able to pull, push, lift and move a minimum of fifty-five (50) pounds. Employee will be in and out of the sanitation truck continuously and on feet for most of the working (8) shift. Must be able to sit, stand, bend, lift, reach, walk and move around during working hours. Must be able to function independently, have personal integrity, flexibility and the ability to work effectively with the general public and fellow employees. Must be able to speak and read the English language. Must be able to execute the policies and procedures of the Borough. Must be able to understand and follow both written and verbal directions. Knowledge of hazards and safety precautions of the work assigned. Ability to work without close supervision. Ability to use or learn to operation of other Borough fleet vehicles within the department. EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING High school diploma or equivalent; or any acceptable equivalent experience. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS Possession of valid Class B (Class A preferred) operator’s license issued by the State of Pennsylvania, or ability to obtain a Pennsylvania driver’s license within one (6) months of hire. Must be insurable by the Borough’s vehicle insurance carrier.
