Wastewater Treatment Operator II

DEFINITION This position will be responsible for technical work regarding sample collection and preparation, laboratory analysis and record keeping, facility inspections, general equipment maintenance and general process operations within the Wastewater Treatment Facility. Working hours are Monday through Friday from 7:00 am until 3:00 pm. In addition, this position is required to participate in the weekend rotation for general wastewater operations, as well as respond to “emergency” call outs, as necessary. This position may, from time to time, be temporarily assigned to other tasks as deemed necessary by the Wastewater Operations Manager. Tasks may include work outside of this job classification. KNOWLDEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES 1) Personal integrity, flexibility and the ability to work effectively with the general public and fellow employees 2) Ability to understand and perform oral and written instructions 3) Communicate effectively with commercial laboratory personnel, professional engineers and equipment representatives through both written and verbal methods 4) Knowledge of wastewater processes and operations 5) Knowledge of SCADA operating systems 6) Knowledge of chemical feed systems 7) Knowledge of basic chemistry relative to wastewater facility operations 8) Knowledge of various practices and procedures relative to the laboratory analysis required in wastewater treatment plant operations, and the ability to act on those laboratory results to maintain effective and efficient operations 9) Knowledge of pumps, motors, process equipment and control panels 10) Good mechanical abilities 11) Good organizational skills 12) Ability to prepare and maintain effective laboratory analysis logs and monthly reports 13) Capable of working in adverse weather environments, as well as close spaces 14) Knowledge of hazards and safety precautions of the work assigned 15) Work independently and with minimal supervision at times 16) Assume general supervisory responsibilities during the absence of the WWTP Operations Manager 1 EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING • High school diploma or equivalent, preferably with successful completion of mathematics, chemistry, and physics courses, or any acceptable combination of experience and training.  At least three (3) years of relevant experience at a wastewater treatment plant, encouraged. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS Possession of a valid Wastewater Operators License, required, or the ability to obtain within twenty-four (24 months) of hire date. Class B, E (or higher) Subclass 1 (minimum) Possession of a valid Class B Pennsylvania motor vehicle operator’s license, required or ability to obtain same within one (1) year of hire date. Must be insurable by the Borough’s vehicle insurance carrier Must submit to pre-employment drug test and periodic Radom drug/alcohol testing as required by law ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF JOB 1) Complete any/all in-house laboratory analysis required to effectively and efficiently operate the wastewater treatment plant. Testing can include pH, D.O., Temperature, MLSS, Alkalinity, Total Phosphorus, Ammonia-Nitrogen, at a minimum 2) Compile any/all analytical records necessary to assure compliance with PADEP regulations 3) Collect and prepare daily, weekly, quarterly and annual samples for analysis and/or shipment to an outside certified commercial laboratory 4) Assist with preparation of monthly PADEP reporting 5) Assist with operation, maintenance and repair of equipment used in the wastewater treatment plant 6) Assist with operational decisions relative to the effective and efficient operations of the wastewater treatment plant 7) Assist with cleaning and calibration of ORP and D.O. analyzers 8) Assist with solids blanket determination within thickeners and clarifiers 9) Assist with general operational tasks, including daily plant checks 10) Review of SCADA operating system 2 11) Other operational duties as deemed necessary or required by the WWTP Operations Manager, including performance of related and, at times, unrelated work. 12) Assume general supervisory responsibilities during the absence of the WWTP Operations Manager 13) Perform duties in outside job classifications, from time to time.
